The Difficult One
Dmitriy Tyazhlov
Mykola Bondarchuk

Ukraine, 2007 - 20 mins

A childrens home: a refuge for young people in flight from family problems, even violence. But soon the intial sense of freedom turns into a new form of dependency. Despite this, can they learn in time to be the masters of their own destinies?

Bulgaria's Abandoned Children
Kate Blewett
UK 2007 / 89 Mins

Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. Bulgaria's Abandoned Children looks at life in Mogilino- an institute with 75 abandoned children suffering from a variety of disabilities.

Milan is mute and lives each day helping out around the place and just watching. Didi arrived recently because her mother no longer wants her- she is 18 years old, autistic and talks a great deal. Vassy is blind and suffers with cerebral palsy. Stoyan too is blind and silent.

Abandoned into the hands of the director and carers of Mogilino, we watch the daily lives of these children and their fellow inmates. When their time is up here, they will graduate to similar warehouses for unwanted adults.

A disturbing portrait of life in a Bulgrarian Children's Institute.
